On January 17, 1899 an immigrant family gave birth to a boy named Al Capone. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, left school after the sixth grade at age fourteen and banded with an infamous street gang. He was a member of two "kid gangs," the Forty Thieves Juniors and the Brooklyn Rippers. Between scams he worked as a clerk in a candy store and a cutter in a book bindery.

In spite of severe convictions from the courts, Capone always persuaded his keepers at the Federal Penitentiary to connive at his every wish and often dictated his own rules. His cell was decorated with expensive furnishings. There were a radio and a carpet.

Capone played a big role in the illegal activities.
