Approach on Smoking Ban Delayed

Nobody knows the effect of smoking ban over some businesses. When the anti-smoking legislation takes effect in USA, the bars and restaurants owners’ income decreased.

The law approved by the state forbids smoking in all bars, restaurants and workplaces, except in Detroit casinos, cigar bars, tobacco specialty stores, home offices and vehicles.

Smoking will be permitted on the spieling floors at the three casinos too, but it will be banned in their bars, restaurants and hotels.

Scientists declared that Michigan is the 38th of the country’s 50 states to ban smoking.

During the day, fewer than 20 percent of the patrons claim chairs in the smoking area. Researchers observed that at noon, no one was sitting in the smoking section. That changes at night, however, when about 40 percent of the patrons want to light a cigarette.

David Beatty, daytime manager at Malarkey’s Irish Pub in Southgate, explained: "Since the state is unified and any place you go you have to deal with the same situation, I think everyone will have to install."

He expects that some smokers will refuse the purpose, possibly not go out as much, but in the end they will decide to deal with the change.

Unfortunately it’s too early to predict the influence the smoking ban will have on business. However what will be good for businesses and their employees is that the working medium will be cleaner.

"The majority of my staff is nonsmokers and we’re very strict about smoking habits. They get breaks and a chance to smoke, but they are not allowed to smoke on the floor," Beatty added.

Julie Walker of Dearborn doesn’t like the smoking ban and believes it isn’t fair that Detroit casinos are exempt. She explained: "As a customer, I don’t like anybody telling me what I can and cannot do. But I’m a wise person; I can see both sides." For example if families bring children into restaurants she understands parents who don’t want their children breathing in tobacco smoke.

Many times when people are in nonsmoking sections, the smoke can blow over from the smoking sections, she added.

But as it is know bars are made for adults, that’s why in such places smoking can be permitted, Julie Walker explained.

"When you choose to work in a bar, you choose to work at a place where there are vices. There are more dangers working in a bar than in a church, and secondhand smoke is one of them," she declared.

Most of smokers reported that in general people come to bars to smoke, watch TV and have a drink, but without smoking their relax will not be entire.
