The harmful effect of cigarette smoking is firstly known by doctors. Doctors, especially those from Victoria declared that the federal Government is not acting enough against smoking tobacco products.
They are calling for a new state tax on tobacco that would see the price of a packet of cigarettes rise to $20.
The Victorian section of the Australian Medical Association (AMA) has suggested a 'tobacco deal tax' that would raise the cost of a cigarette by 10 cents from next July, rising to 30 cents in July 2012.
The American Medical Association (AMA) is appealing to the Victorian Government to introduce the tax, declaring that the Federal Government stays silent.
The president of AMA Victoria, Dr. Harry Hemley, explained that he consider that three quarters of smokers would quit if the price of a packet of cigarettes rose in price by half.
"That's why we're supporting the state Government to introduce the tobacco transaction levy, which would give the Victorian State Government an extra $3 billion a year only in Victoria alone, which would allow us to fund a lot of the lack in our public hospital consumption," he reported.
Treasurer John Lenders declared that the AMA's suggestion will be examined. "We've seen the number of Victorians smoke fell from in the mid 40 percent to about 16 percent over the last 20 years and that is saving thousands of lives," he added.
Anti-tobacco researchers declared that they are afraid that tobacco smugglers will buy cigars and cigarettes in low-tax rules and will sell them in high-tax states, such as New York and California. That’s mean that increases in taxes make the illegal tobacco trade even more profitable.
Meantime the Federal Government said that it is still investigating the Health Taskforce report.
