Lagos — Annually more than five million of people die worldwide because of the harmful tobacco effect.
According to Lagos State Commissioner for Health Dr. Jide Idris, annually tobacco manufacturers spent millions of dollars thus luring new users into nicotine addiction.
Tuesday at the press conference dedicated to the World No Tobacco Day Idris declared that due to the wise advertisement campaigns and the use of thoroughly elaborated pack designs, the tobacco industry manufacturers continue to distract people’s attention from the fatal effects of smoking products.
Dr. Jide Idris who suggested the theme for 2010 No Smoking Day, “Gender and Tobacco with emphasis on Marketing to Women” declared the WHO statistics as thrilling, adding that such detection has to help all smokers to stop smoking thus preventing future health problems and premature death.
Following the example of Erika Keterre from South Africa, Idris called upon all Nigerians to “help to increase the awareness about harmful and destructive effects of smoking and prevent our friends and relatives from becoming statistics in years to come”. Declaring the threats that expect smokers, Idris stated that cigarette is the only existing legal product used by the tobacco manufacturers that kills.” According to Dr. Jide Idris annually more than five million of people die worldwide from the dangerous effects of tobacco.”
He stated that cigarette use among women give rise to a variety of diseases such as: cancers, including cancer of the esophagus, mouth and lung. He also added that smokers are exposed to heart attack, stroke, emphysema and other dangerous diseases.
Besides, Idris added that fair sex smokers are exposed to higher risks of developing cervical cancer and fatal states of reproductive system, as infertility and early menopause.
“Being pregnant women smokers are at a greater risk of misbirth and other pregnancy complications as for example detachment of the placenta birth and ectopic pregnancy. And these are not all problems related to smoking”.
As Idris said children born at smoking women very often show low concentration and reading rate. They are also exposed to asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cancer and are likely to become smokers when they grow.
Other health problems caused by smoking revealed by Dr Idris include aggravation of asthmatic conditions, various chest infections, flu and TB cases.
Idris condemns the wide range of tobacco products, sophisticated advertising and promotional campaigns realized by the manufacturers who create every means to make people continue smoking thus making them tobacco addict. More anxious fact is that tobacco companies produce brands specifically for women luring them in this nicotine world”.
And furthermore those captivating images of young smokers displayed in tobacco advertisements are like an appeal in adolescent minds to start smoking.
