In May 2008 was introduced smoking ban in closed spaces. The new legislation has reduced cigarette consumption in Turkey too. After a full investigation researchers found that smokers smoked 520 millions cigarettes less in July 2008 than in the same month of 2007 and 457 million cigarettes less in August 2008 than in August 2007. With smoking ban the amount of fines that smokers paid for smoking in closed area exceeded YTL 20,000.
The effect of the smoking ban on cigarette consumption was also observed in official statistics beginning with July. Total cigarette consumption in May 2007 came out to 9,368 million and this number increased to 9,443 million in May 2008 even though the ban had been in effect for 10 days of the month only. But in June 2007 cigarette consumption was 9,420 million and this number rose to 9,592 million in June 2008.
The smokers’ numbers began to decrease beginning with July, with the total rate of decrease totaling 4.6 percent in July and August compared to the same months of 2007. The total cigarette consumption in July 2007 was 10,700 million and this number dropped to 10,180 million in July 2008. The consumption decreased from 10,678 million to 10,221 million in August 2008, compared to August 2007.
Researchers said that they will compare the cigarette consumption rates in every month in order to understand well the effect of the smoking ban over cigarette consumption. For example July 2007 and July 2008, two time periods during which the labeling system was applied, during this period cigarette consumption decreased by 4.9 percent.
Researchers reported in a study that smokers became accustomed the new ban easily, and both smokers and non-smokers became well aware of the importance of fresh air in closed areas.
