It was stated in a recently published report that Philip Morris plans to sell and produce its legendary cigarettes brand Marlboro with its old Indian partner Godfrey Philips, president of Godfrey Philips.

Philip Morris Tobacco Companies, also named Altria Group, are one of the largest world tobacco corporations. Along with well-known brand Marlboro, Altria is the producer of famous Parliament, Virginia Slims, L&M, Benson & Hedges etc.

In order to realize this initiative, Philip Morris plans to make a join-venture with Indian businessman KK Modi. Each part holds 36 % each in Godfrey Philips.

According to stated, Godfrey Philips will take up manufacturing, distribution and sales of Marlboro, but Philip Morris will be responsible for the marketing.

The both parts discuss about this offer, but definitive results haven’t yet been announced.

This initiative offers the possibility for tobacco giant to enlarge the brand’s distributor network, avoid any import levies and respectively raise sales of Marlboro cigarettes.

Godfrey Philips President confirmed the common plan regarding the local manufacturing of Marlboro, but added: “…We have been in discussions on this, but no decision has been made yet.”

If discussions reach the happy end, the venture deal could be in place by mid-year.
