The antismoking legislation is violated by a lot of smokers, said researchers. That’s why in Alberta, a new law will allow authorities to seize vehicles and other property if tobacco taxes are ignored.

Iris Evans, Finance Minister, said: "Clearly the message we want to get across here in Alberta is that there's zero tolerance for people not paying the tax, so there's zero indulgence for people which abuse the law and assume the government won't take action."

In Alberta was introduced the Tobacco Tax Amendment Act this week.

Now Albertans pay $3 more on a carton of cigarettes, bringing the tax to $40. For loose tobacco, the tax breaks down to an extra 11.5 cents per gram, or a total 30 cents per gram.

If the amendments are passed, fines for skirting the taxes double from $5,000 to $10,000 on first offence and from $15,000 to $30,000 on second offence.

The new penalties were introduced in Alberta for to keep people from abusing rules for selling cigarettes.

In general Alberta does not have a tobacco smuggling problem, but smoking is a very big problem in many of the other parts (of Canada), mostly in other eastern provinces.

Today in Alberta, only licensed wholesalers and importers can sell or buy tobacco for resale. If you don't like paying high prices for tobacco, then quit complaining about it and stop smoking, said researchers.
